France’s real estate wealth tax reaches 2.3 billion euros in 2025
The real estate wealth tax in France, known as the Impôt sur la fortune immobilière (IFI), generated 2.3 billion euros in 2025, marking an 8% increase compared with the previous year, according to data released by the French public finance directorate.
The rise in revenue is mainly explained by an increase in the number of taxable households, which grew from 186,000 in 2024 to 193,600 in 2025. Authorities also noted a modest increase in the average property wealth per household, contributing to higher overall tax assessments.
The IFI applies to households whose real estate assets exceed 1.3 million euros. On average, affected taxpayers report annual incomes above 300,000 euros and pay significant income tax contributions, reflecting their high-net-worth status.
According to fiscal authorities, most taxpayers subject to the IFI live in the Paris region and tend to be older and more often in couples compared to the general population.
Economists note that fluctuations in real estate prices and asset concentration play a major role in the evolution of this tax, which remains a key source of revenue from high-value property holdings.
