France introduces €50 fuel allowance for low-income high-mileage workers

The government of France has officially published in the Journal Officiel the details of a new €50 fuel allowance designed to support low-income workers who travel long distances for work. The measure aims to ease the financial pressure caused by persistently high fuel prices.

The scheme targets approximately three million “low-income high-mileage workers” who rely on private vehicles for their daily professional activities. Eligible individuals must have a reference taxable income below a set threshold and regularly travel significant distances between home and workplace, or cover at least 8,000 kilometers annually for professional purposes.

The application process is expected to open by the end of May through the official tax website, impots.gouv.fr. The exact launch date will be confirmed through a separate official decree.

This allowance is part of a broader set of government measures introduced in response to rising energy costs. The authorities have also extended and expanded support schemes for various sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, construction, and transport services such as taxis and ride-hailing drivers.

The overall cost of these fuel-related subsidies is significant, with public spending estimates reaching hundreds of millions of euros over a short period. Additional support measures have been introduced for agricultural diesel, known as non-road diesel, which benefits from reduced taxation to help farmers manage operational costs.

Government officials state that these policies are designed to protect household purchasing power while maintaining economic stability in sectors heavily dependent on fuel consumption. However, the measures also reflect ongoing debates about the long-term sustainability of energy subsidies and their impact on public finances.

As energy prices remain volatile, further adjustments to support schemes are expected in the coming months, depending on economic conditions and inflation trends.
