France faces massive holiday traffic as heatwave fuels travel disruptions
France's summer holiday getaway has begun with severe traffic congestion across much of the country, as soaring temperatures and one of the busiest travel weekends of the year combine to place heavy pressure on the national road network.
By 10:00 a.m., traffic monitoring agency Bison Futé reported more than 420 kilometres of traffic jams, urging motorists to exercise extra caution while travelling in extreme heat.
Heavy congestion spreads across major routes
The worst delays were recorded along key holiday corridors, particularly in the Rhône Valley, where thousands of travellers headed toward southern destinations.
Bison Futé classified outbound traffic conditions as black, its highest level of congestion, across western, northern and central-eastern France. The remainder of the country was placed on red alert, indicating very difficult driving conditions throughout the day.
Transport authorities warned that congestion was expected to intensify as holidaymakers continued to leave major urban centres.
Bastille Day holiday adds to travel demand
Traffic volumes have been amplified by the proximity of Bastille Day on 14 July, which falls on Tuesday this year, encouraging many residents to extend their break into a long holiday weekend.
The combination of school holidays, favourable vacation schedules and warm weather has created one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.
Road operators expect traffic to remain dense throughout Saturday before gradually easing in the days ahead.
Heatwave raises additional safety concerns
Beyond the traffic delays, authorities are reminding drivers to adapt to exceptionally high temperatures.
Bison Futé has advised motorists to stay hydrated, take regular breaks and ensure vehicles are properly prepared for prolonged journeys in hot weather.
The warning comes as France continues to experience successive heatwaves, with extreme temperatures affecting travel conditions and increasing the risk of vehicle breakdowns, driver fatigue and road accidents.
The convergence of peak holiday departures and intense summer heat has once again highlighted the growing operational challenges facing transport authorities during France's busiest vacation periods.
