France deploys military contingent to Greenland amid arctic tensions

France has begun deploying a military contingent to Greenland as part of a broader European mission, against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions in the Arctic region.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the first troops sent to Greenland will be supported by land, air, and naval assets, emphasizing France’s solidarity with Denmark and its allies through joint military exercises.

The deployment is taking place within the framework of Operation “Arctic Endurance,” led by Denmark and involving several European countries, including Germany, Sweden, and Norway, alongside other NATO partners. These nations have also dispatched limited detachments to conduct reconnaissance and training operations in extreme Arctic conditions.

According to French defense sources cited by the media, the mission aims to strengthen the allied presence alongside Greenlandic authorities, enhance interoperability among European forces, and prepare for coordinated operations in harsh environments, while reaffirming transatlantic cooperation in response to the region’s growing strategic importance.

The deployment comes as US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on several European countries, stating that the measures would remain in place until Greenland is fully acquired by the United States. Trump justified his stance by highlighting Greenland’s increasing role in US defense and security architecture.
