Five killed as severe flooding hits Togo after heavy rainfall
At least five people have died following severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall across several regions of Togo, according to a provisional government assessment released on Saturday.
The flooding followed intense downpours on 28 and 29 June, which inundated homes, disrupted transportation and caused significant material damage in multiple parts of the country.
Heavy rains overwhelm communities
Authorities said the torrential rainfall led to widespread flooding, particularly in the capital, Lomé, where numerous residential areas were submerged.
The government reported that, in addition to the five confirmed fatalities, the floods caused extensive property damage and severely affected road traffic.
Officials cautioned that the figures remain provisional as damage assessments continue.
Part of broader regional weather emergency
The flooding in Togo comes amid unusually intense rainfall across the Gulf of Guinea at the beginning of the region's rainy season.
Neighbouring countries, including Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria, have also experienced significant flooding linked to the same weather system.
The widespread impact has highlighted the vulnerability of many West African urban areas to seasonal flooding and extreme rainfall events.

Emergency services and government agencies continue to assess the extent of the damage while monitoring weather conditions for any further risks.
