Finnair selects Embraer over Airbus for narrow-body fleet renewal
Finnish airline Finnair has announced a major step in modernizing its European operations by choosing Brazilian manufacturer Embraer over Airbus for its next generation of narrow-body aircraft.
The carrier confirmed it will acquire 18 E195-E2 jets, with additional options that could significantly expand the deal in the coming years. This decision marks a strategic shift away from Airbus, its long-time supplier for short- and medium-haul aircraft.
According to Finnair’s leadership, the Embraer E195-E2 stands out for its operational flexibility and reduced environmental impact. The aircraft is designed to deliver quieter performance and improved fuel efficiency, helping the airline lower carbon emissions per passenger.
While moving toward Embraer for new deliveries, Finnair is also exploring opportunities in the secondary market, with plans to add used Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft to support capacity needs in the short term.
The airline’s fleet renewal comes after several challenging years for the aviation sector. Like many carriers, Finnair faced significant disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, geopolitical tensions and airspace restrictions between Europe and Russia have forced the airline to rethink its network strategy and operational efficiency.
Industry analysts note that Embraer has gained momentum globally, particularly in the regional jet segment, as airlines accelerate fleet upgrades delayed during the pandemic. The growing demand for smaller, fuel-efficient aircraft has strengthened the Brazilian manufacturer’s position against competitors.
Finnair’s latest move reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry, where sustainability, cost efficiency, and adaptability are becoming decisive factors in fleet planning.
