Fez Initiates Extensive Restoration Program for Historic Mosques and Zawiyas

In a dedicated effort to safeguard the rich cultural and spiritual legacy of the ancient medina, the city of Fez is embarking on an ambitious restoration program aimed at its emblematic historic mosques and zawiyas. Recently launched by the Agency for the Development and Rehabilitation of the City of Fez (ADER-Fès), this project entails comprehensive architectural studies and supervision of restoration and rehabilitation works for several mosques and zawiyas.

The restoration initiative encompasses the Al-Sadiqiya and Al-Sharradiya mosques and zawiyas, alongside a project aimed at consolidating, restoring, and rehabilitating the Tijania Mosque and Zawiya (Derb Ben Salem) and its surrounding areas.

These endeavors are part of a partnership agreement focused on enhancing economic activities and improving living conditions in the Medina of Fez (2020-2024), signed in March 2020 in the presence of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. A provisional budget of 5.9 million Moroccan dirhams has been allocated for the restoration works on the Al-Sadiqiya and Al-Sharradiya mosques and zawiyas.

This operation not only aims to preserve but also to highlight the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the medina, ensuring adherence to the architectural and historical norms inherent in this exceptional legacy, as emphasized by ADER-Fès.

Through this ambitious restoration initiative, Fez endeavors to rejuvenate its historical and religious landmarks, showcasing the enduring allure of its architectural marvels. The meticulous preservation efforts will undoubtedly contribute to the perpetuation of Fez's illustrious heritage, ensuring that future generations can immerse themselves in the captivating narrative of this ancient city.
