Fes promotes mathematics as a pillar of scientific sovereignty at national event
Fes strengthened its position as an intellectual hub by hosting the Moroccan Day of Mathematics, a national event dedicated to promoting scientific culture and highlighting the importance of mathematics in modern societies.
Organized in partnership with Euromed University of Fes (UEMF) and academic associations, the event brought together researchers, students, and the general public through conferences, workshops, and competitions. The initiative aims to make mathematics more accessible while emphasizing its central role in a data-driven and technology-oriented world.
During a keynote lecture, UEMF President Mostapha Bousmina traced the historical development of mathematics, from its origins in ancient civilizations to its transformative impact on modern science. Early numerical systems, initially developed for trade and agriculture, gradually evolved into abstract reasoning frameworks that underpin today’s technological advances.
He highlighted the major contributions of scholars from the Arab-Muslim world, particularly the development of the decimal system and the concept of zero, which revolutionized scientific thinking and computation. These innovations laid the groundwork for future progress in algebra and applied sciences.
The evolution of mathematics continued through the European Renaissance, leading to breakthroughs such as calculus, probability, and statistics. These advances enabled scientists to model complex natural and social phenomena, reinforcing mathematics as a universal language of science.
