Trump to honor Elon Musk with top US science medal
US President Donald Trump is set to honor Elon Musk and several prominent technology executives with some of the country’s highest scientific and technological distinctions, highlighting the administration’s focus on innovation and technological leadership.
The White House announced that Musk will receive the National Medal of Science during a ceremony scheduled to take place on Thursday as part of the “Science: A New Golden Age” summit. The award recognizes major contributions to scientific advancement in the United States.
Musk will be joined among the recipients by Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su. Their recognition reflects the growing influence of technology leaders in areas ranging from artificial intelligence and computing to advanced engineering.
Other executives will receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest US government honor for technological achievement. The recipients include Michael Dell, founder and chairman of Dell Technologies, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
The White House said the administration appreciated the contributions made by the honorees to science and technology, arguing that their work has helped maintain the United States’ position at the forefront of global innovation.
Musk, who leads companies including SpaceX, Tesla and X, has had a complex political relationship with Trump. He was once a close ally of the president and a major financial supporter of his political campaign before the two publicly clashed over government spending and efforts to reduce federal costs.
Despite those tensions, Musk has remained involved in discussions at the highest levels of government and technology. He was among technology executives invited to the White House for talks on regulating and managing artificial intelligence.
Musk, Huang and other technology leaders were also invited to a dinner hosted by Trump for Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Chinese leader’s official visit last month, underscoring the continued importance of major technology companies in US economic and strategic policy.
