Fans bid farewell to Japan’s last giant pandas
Emotional scenes unfolded in Tokyo as visitors gathered to say goodbye to Japan’s last remaining giant pandas, Lei Lei and Xiao Xiao, who are set to return to China, marking the end of a 50-year presence of the iconic animals in the country.
The popular black-and-white bears, housed at Ueno Zoological Gardens, have long been a symbol of goodwill between Japan and China under Beijing’s well-known “panda diplomacy” initiative, which began following the normalization of diplomatic relations in the early 1970s.
On Sunday, panda enthusiasts filled the zoo, many visibly moved as they watched the twin pandas calmly eating bamboo. Limited access was granted through an online lottery, allowing thousands of visitors brief moments with the four-year-old animals, while others gathered outside wearing panda-themed clothing and accessories.
For many families, the farewell was deeply personal. Visitors expressed sadness at the departure, highlighting the pandas’ role in bringing joy to children and strengthening cultural ties between the two nations.
The pandas are expected to leave Japan in the coming days amid a period of diplomatic tension between Tokyo and Beijing. While officials have not explicitly linked the move to politics, experts note that panda exchanges have historically reflected the state of bilateral relations.
