European military mission in Greenland amid tensions with Trump
A European military mission is set to begin this week in Greenland, an Arctic territory under Danish sovereignty, amid renewed geopolitical tensions following statements by former US President Donald Trump, who has once again expressed interest in the strategic island.
France, Germany, Sweden and Norway have announced the deployment of military personnel to Greenland as part of a reconnaissance and coordination mission conducted under the Danish-led exercise Arctic Endurance. The initiative aims to strengthen surveillance capabilities and assess potential European contributions to regional security.
European defense officials say the mission focuses primarily on maritime monitoring, situational awareness and cooperation in the Arctic, a region increasingly affected by climate change and rising strategic competition. The presence of European forces is intended to support Denmark and reinforce allied coordination without escalating tensions.
The deployment follows high-level talks in Washington between US, Danish and Greenlandic officials, which ended with what Copenhagen described as a “fundamental disagreement” over the future of Greenland. Danish authorities reaffirmed that any cooperation with the United States must respect sovereignty and international law.
Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons, citing concerns over Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. His remarks have raised alarm in both Denmark and Greenland, where residents have expressed fears about growing militarization and external pressure.
As Arctic sea routes become more accessible, European governments are seeking to maintain stability in the region while preventing unilateral actions that could alter the geopolitical balance.
