EU and Morocco renew agricultural partnership with updated agreement
Rabat and Brussels have strengthened their long-standing cooperation with the signing of an amended agricultural agreement, reinforcing trade and economic ties between the European Union and Morocco. The European Commission highlighted the “deep friendship” and “solid, multidimensional cooperation” that has developed between the two partners over the years.
The updated agreement extends preferential tariff treatment to Morocco’s southern regions, including Dakhla and Laayoune, and has been provisionally applied since October 3. This ensures legal certainty for economic operators while safeguarding the effective distribution of benefits to intended recipients.
Under the accord, all products must carry clear labeling indicating their region of origin. This transparency is designed to guarantee that trade advantages reach local producers and comply with EU regulatory standards.
The European Commission confirmed that further discussions on the agreement will take place soon within the EU Council and European Parliament. Both Morocco and the EU expressed interest in deepening their partnership in the coming months, particularly through a broader strategic partnership agreement.
This development represents a significant step in EU-Morocco trade relations, establishing a stable and transparent framework for agricultural exports from Morocco’s southern territories while reaffirming the commitment of both parties to long-term cooperation.
