A Chinese woman, identified as Yaqi X, has been apprehended in Leipzig on charges of espionage, specifically for allegedly transmitting sensitive information about the Leipzig/Halle airport to Chinese intelligence. This airport serves as a crucial logistics hub for Germany’s defense sector, particularly for military exports.

According to German prosecutors, Yaqi X, 38, was employed by a logistics company at the airport and is accused of relaying details concerning flights, passengers, and military cargo to Jian G, another individual suspected of espionage for China. The timeframe of these alleged activities spans from August 2023 to February 2024. The information shared reportedly included specifics about military equipment transportation and individuals associated with a German arms manufacturer.

The investigation has revealed that Jian G had previously worked as an aide to Maximilian Krah, a member of the European Parliament representing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Jian G was arrested earlier this year and is also implicated in spying activities targeting Chinese dissidents in Germany and leaking information about European Parliament discussions to Chinese authorities.

Following her arrest, Yaqi X was remanded in custody while searches were conducted at both her residence and workplace. The case appears interconnected with Jian G's prior espionage allegations, raising concerns about the extent of foreign interference in German political and defense matters.

This incident underscores the growing tension between Germany and China amid increasing scrutiny over espionage activities linked to Beijing. As Germany reassesses its economic ties with China, such cases may further complicate diplomatic relations between the two nations.
