Morocco Bolsters Maritime Influence with IMO Council Vice-Presidency

Morocco has taken a significant step in strengthening its position in global maritime affairs, as highlighted by a recent high-level meeting between Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez in Rabat.

The meeting, which took place on Friday, marked Dominguez's first official visit to Morocco since his election as IMO Secretary-General in 2023. It also represented the first time an IMO Secretary-General has visited an African or Arab country in this capacity, underscoring the growing importance of Morocco in international maritime circles.

Central to the discussions was Morocco's current role as vice-president of the IMO Council, a position that reflects the country's increasing influence in shaping global maritime policies. This leadership role comes in the wake of Morocco's recent re-election to the IMO Council in "Category C" for the 2024-2025 term, marking its 16th consecutive election since joining the organization in 1962.

During the talks, Bourita emphasized Morocco's commitment to becoming a leader in maritime cooperation, particularly with African nations. He outlined the Kingdom's maritime vision, guided by King Mohammed VI, which aims to establish the Atlantic as a zone of stability, security, and prosperity.

Dominguez praised Morocco's active involvement in the IMO Council and acknowledged the country's ongoing efforts to enhance maritime safety and support the development of Africa's maritime capabilities. This recognition highlights Morocco's growing stature in the international maritime community.

The IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations with 176 member states, plays a crucial role in overseeing the safety and security of international shipping and preventing marine pollution. Morocco's prominent position within this organization signals its increasing importance in global maritime governance.

This meeting and Morocco's strengthened ties with the IMO come at a time when maritime issues are gaining prominence on the international stage. As countries grapple with challenges such as maritime security, environmental protection, and sustainable development of ocean resources, Morocco's enhanced role in the IMO positions it to contribute significantly to addressing these global concerns.
