Ensuring Secure Supply: RADEEMA's $3 Billion Investment in Marrakesh's Water and Electricity Infrastructure
The autonomous water and electricity distribution company of Marrakesh, RADEEMA, has unveiled ambitious plans to invest nearly $3 billion over the next five years in fortifying the city's water and power systems. This extensive infrastructure project is geared towards ensuring a reliable supply of basic utilities for Marrakesh's burgeoning population.
RADEEMA's recently disclosed strategic roadmap earmarks a budget of 2.8 billion Moroccan dirhams (MMDH) for critical water, electricity, and sanitation projects spanning 2024-2028. This includes an allocation of 735 million dirhams for investments in 2024 alone. The overarching goals of this investment initiative are to secure continuous access to water and electricity, enhance service efficiencies through digitization, and extend coverage to underserved communities.
In addition to improving service reliability, RADEEMA will prioritize environmental protection efforts such as pollution cleanup and flood control. Resources will also be directed towards digital transformation initiatives aimed at streamlining customer processes. Noteworthy achievements during the previous planning period (2018-2023) include the delivery of 1.875 billion dirhams worth of infrastructure upgrades. These achievements encompassed the establishment of a new 30,000 cubic meter water reservoir and expansions to Marrakesh's wastewater treatment plant.
Looking ahead, the committed funds, amounting to billions, seek to reinforce Marrakesh's core utility delivery systems, fostering sustained and inclusive growth. RADEEMA, by adopting a long-term perspective and strategically investing in priority projects, aims to future-proof the city's water and power grids to meet the needs of both current and future generations. Recognizing secure and sustainable access to basic services as critical, this initiative is pivotal for supporting Marrakesh's economic and social development in the decades to come.
