The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has raised serious concerns about the influence and actions of billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of fomenting division and undermining democratic values. Speaking during the launch of commemorative events marking the 50th anniversary of the death of dictator Francisco Franco, Sánchez described Musk as a figure at the forefront of an “international reactionary movement” that seeks to disrupt democratic institutions and promote discord.

Sánchez highlighted Musk’s controversial interventions in European political discourse, which have included strong backing for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of Germany's upcoming elections. The Prime Minister expressed alarm at Musk’s public support for political groups that Sánchez characterized as heirs to extremist ideologies, emphasizing the need for vigilance among democratic nations.

“These actions challenge us all—those of us who stand for democracy,” Sánchez stated during the event held at Madrid’s Reina Sofía Museum, home to Pablo Picasso's iconic anti-Franco painting, Guernica. His remarks underscored a broader concern about the resurgence of authoritarianism in parts of Europe and the potential for influential figures to destabilize democratic systems.

Musk, meanwhile, has scheduled a discussion with the leader of the AfD, Alice Weidel, as part of his vocal support for the party. His endorsement has drawn widespread criticism from European leaders who view the AfD’s platform as divisive and regressive. Additionally, Musk has been vocal about UK politics, calling for the removal of the British Prime Minister and advocating for the release of a prominent far-right figure currently imprisoned.

The billionaire's outspoken stances and actions have sparked widespread debate about the role of influential figures in shaping political landscapes, with many leaders calling for a unified defense of democratic institutions in the face of growing polarization.
