El Karouani questions his absence from Morocco’s CAN 2025 squad
Moroccan defender Souffian El Karouani has expressed confusion and disappointment after being left out of Morocco’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His absence, widely discussed among supporters, has raised questions about the criteria behind the final list chosen by the national coach.
El Karouani admitted he was surprised by the decision, insisting he believed he had earned his place. “I felt I deserved to be there. It’s the coach’s choice, and I will keep working,” he said following the announcement.
According to the player, he received no explanation regarding his omission. He pointed out that he had already been left out during the previous call-up without any communication from the technical staff.
Observers suggest the decision may be linked to the recent arrival of Anass Salah-Eddine, who was cleared by FIFA in October to represent Morocco after playing for the Dutch youth teams. Salah-Eddine made his first appearances with the Atlas Lions in November and seems to have moved ahead in the competition for the left-back position.
Despite his clear frustration, El Karouani insists he intends to stay focused and maintain a positive outlook. “I recover quickly. I put it aside and move forward. For me, it’s not difficult,” he stated, emphasizing his determination to keep proving himself.
