Egyptian film Happy Birthday wins grand prize Dakhla festival
The Egyptian film “Happy Birthday” directed by Sarah Goher won the Grand Prix at the 14th International Film Festival of Dakhla. It marks the first feature film of the director and tells a story centered on the lives of young girls working in environments shaped by social inequality. The narrative focuses on daily struggles and personal resilience within a socially constrained setting.
The jury awarded the fiction feature prize to the Moroccan film “Bribes”, directed by Janane Fatine Mohammadi and Abdelilah Zirat. Acting distinctions went to Tunisian actor Hilmi Dridi for his role in “Round 13”. The best actress prize was shared between Kholoud Betioui for “Bribes” and young performer Doha Ramadan for her role in “Happy Birthday”.
In the documentary category, the Palestinian film “Bliatcho Gaza” by Abdelrahman Sabah received the top award. The jury prize went to the Ugandan documentary “Memories of Love Returned” directed by Ntare Guma Mbaho. Special mentions were also given to “Déchirure” by Fouad Souiba, “The Other… Raeburn” by David Pierre Fila, and “The Departure” by Mohamed Fadel Joumani.
The festival brought together nine fiction films and a broader selection of 19 works from 21 countries across Africa and the Middle East. An international jury composed of filmmakers, actors, and experts oversaw the competition. The event also included screenings for young audiences, professional meetings, and a panorama of Moroccan cinema, reinforcing its role as a platform for regional and international film exchange.
