Dubai Airports scales up operations as UAE airspace fully reopens
Airport operations in Dubai are being progressively expanded after the full reopening of airspace across the United Arab Emirates. The recovery follows the lifting of precautionary measures that had temporarily disrupted regional air traffic.
According to airport authorities, flight capacity is being increased in line with available routing options, allowing airlines to gradually restore schedules.
Strong demand despite recent disruptions
The CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, confirmed that operations are scaling up as conditions normalize. He noted that demand for travel through Dubai remains robust despite recent geopolitical disruptions affecting the region.
During the period of restricted airspace, Dubai’s main airports continued to handle significant volumes of passengers, flights, and cargo, demonstrating the resilience of the aviation sector.
Performance of major hubs
Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, recorded 18.6 million passengers in the first quarter of 2026. Although this represents a decline compared to the previous year, traffic levels remain strong given recent operational challenges.
Alongside it, Al Maktoum International Airport also contributed to handling millions of travelers and substantial cargo volumes, supporting the emirate’s role as a global logistics hub.
Recovery after regional airspace disruptions
The aviation sector in the Gulf region was affected earlier this year by temporary airspace restrictions introduced during heightened regional tensions linked to the Iran war. These measures led to route changes and reduced capacity for nearly two months.
Since the reopening of airspace, operations have steadily improved, allowing airlines to restore connectivity and rebuild passenger flows.
Outlook remains positive
Despite earlier disruptions, Dubai’s aviation sector continues to show resilience. Airport authorities expect gradual capacity increases in the coming months, supported by strong international demand and the city’s position as a key global transit hub.
Long-term forecasts remain optimistic, with pre-disruption expectations suggesting that Dubai International Airport could approach record passenger levels if stability continues.
