Drone fears drive tourists away from Latvia’s “Land of Blue Lakes”

Tourism businesses in eastern Latvia are reporting a sharp decline in visitors as growing fears over drone activity linked to the wider regional security situation discourage travelers from visiting the area known as the “Land of Blue Lakes.”

In Rezekne County, close to the Russian border, guesthouse owners say the usual summer influx of tourists has largely disappeared. Several accommodations that are typically fully booked during the high season are now sitting empty, with last-minute cancellations becoming increasingly common.

Local hospitality operators report that even previously reserved group events, including weddings, have been called off due to concerns that guests could be disrupted by emergency drone alerts or security incidents. This uncertainty has had a direct impact on small businesses that depend heavily on seasonal tourism.

The region, known for its quiet forests, clear lakes, and outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and birdwatching, has traditionally attracted visitors seeking a peaceful rural escape. However, rising anxiety over security risks has overshadowed its appeal.
