In a strategic move to enhance bilateral relations, the Dominican Republic pledges support for Morocco’s sovereignty and announces a new consulate in Dakhla.
The Dominican Republic has officially declared its endorsement of Morocco's claim over Sahara, with plans to establish a consulate in Dakhla, the region's principal city.
This announcement followed a meeting between Dominican President Luis Abinader and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Bourita visited the Dominican Republic to extend congratulations on Abinader's re-election.
According to a statement from the Dominican Foreign Ministry, President Abinader expressed his nation's "firm support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara," emphasizing that Morocco’s autonomy plan is the “only solution” to the protracted conflict.
The establishment of a consular presence in Dakhla signifies a concrete step in fortifying diplomatic relations and enhancing Morocco’s influence in the region.
During the meeting, Bourita invited President Abinader to visit Morocco, an offer that was enthusiastically accepted. Both nations expressed a mutual interest in expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, and tourism.
The Dominican Republic’s stance aligns with a growing international consensus recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara.
