The U.S. government is evaluating the potential national security risks linked to DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company that has reportedly made a significant breakthrough. According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, U.S. officials are investigating the implications of the new AI technology. This follows the U.S. Navy’s decision to ban its personnel from using DeepSeek’s apps, citing security and ethical concerns. The move has raised alarms within the U.S. tech industry, with U.S. President Donald Trump calling the situation a wake-up call for American innovation.

The Navy's warning highlighted potential risks regarding the model’s origins and usage. Meanwhile, David Sacks, the White House's newly appointed AI and crypto czar, suggested that DeepSeek may have utilized knowledge distillation to improve its models, drawing on technologies developed by U.S.-based OpenAI. This practice, where one AI system learns from another, has raised concerns that Chinese companies may be trying to reverse-engineer U.S. innovations.

OpenAI has acknowledged that companies like DeepSeek are constantly attempting to distill their models. As the leading developer in the AI space, OpenAI has committed to protecting its intellectual property and collaborating with the U.S. government to safeguard its advancements.

DeepSeek, which has gained attention for its cost-effective AI model, has faced multiple cyber attacks. The company announced it would temporarily restrict registrations due to these large-scale malicious threats. Despite the challenges, DeepSeek’s rise has disrupted U.S. tech markets, triggering a drop in the stock prices of American firms, although many have since recovered.

While China has invested heavily in technology to diversify its economy, DeepSeek is not among the leading Chinese firms competing with U.S. giants in the AI space. Experts maintain that the U.S. holds a significant advantage, particularly with its dominance in chip manufacturing. However, the exact methods behind DeepSeek’s model remain unclear, leaving room for speculation about the company’s future potential.

In response to the developments, President Trump stated that if DeepSeek’s breakthrough could offer a more affordable solution to AI, it could ultimately benefit the U.S., reinforcing the nation's position as a leader in the field.
