China develops bone glue that repairs fractures in minutes
A team of Chinese researchers has developed an innovative bone adhesive inspired by oysters’ ability to stick to underwater surfaces, enabling fractures to be repaired in just three minutes, according to local media Zhejiang Online.
The medical glue, called Bone-02, was created by Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, affiliated with Zhejiang University. It can accurately secure bone fragments with a simple injection, even in blood-rich environments, explained orthopedic surgeon Lin Xianfeng, the product’s designer.
Laboratory tests have demonstrated high mechanical strength, with bonding forces exceeding 400 pounds, sufficient to replace traditional metal implants.
An additional advantage is that the adhesive naturally resorbs as the bone heals, eliminating the need for a second surgery to remove implants.
The concept originated in 2016 when Lin, then a resident doctor, observed the complexity and long duration of surgeries for severe fractures. He drew inspiration from oysters’ ability to adhere firmly to underwater surfaces to design a glue that works effectively in the human body’s wet environment.
