In a proactive move to shape urban futures, the much-awaited 8th edition of Casablanca Smart City is set to take center stage on June 5 and 6, 2024. Organized by WeCasablanca, an initiative championing the city's assets, this year's event carries the thought-provoking theme "From Smart Citizen to Smart Metropolis," underscoring the pivotal role of urban development in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Building upon the resounding success of the previous edition, which drew over 600 participants and featured 66 esteemed speakers, the forthcoming event promises to be a dynamic platform for fostering discussions and initiatives that can contribute to the creation of smarter, more efficient, and inclusive cities.

The 7th edition, held in June 2023 under the banner "Smart City: Towards Sustainable Metropolitan Transitions," captured significant attention and participation, with over 50 media outlets providing comprehensive coverage. Structured in an agora format, the event showcased more than 15 international models of smart city initiatives, underscoring the global momentum towards urban transformation.

Notably, the previous edition also hosted a startup village, an open innovation lab, and a scientific university space, nurturing innovative ideas and fostering entrepreneurship. Around 24 young entrepreneurs and startup founders seized the opportunity to present their projects related to smart systems, encompassing governance, social and community systems, infrastructure, smart services, ecology, and sustainable development.

A highlight of the event was the pitch competition, where 12 startups were meticulously selected to present their innovative solutions. Three startups – Presta Freedom, Crescents, and Smart Collecte – emerged victorious, claiming the coveted "Smart City Casablanca Awards 2023" for their groundbreaking contributions.

The upcoming Casablanca Smart City event will feature an exhibition space meticulously designed to foster exchanges and partnerships between local and international actors, ensuring a vibrant exchange of ideas and best practices. Additionally, a dedicated startup village will be set up to showcase innovative projects by young entrepreneurs in the smart city sector, fostering an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship.

This initiative aims to bring together researchers, innovators, and decision-makers, creating a collaborative environment where knowledge can be shared, innovative solutions can be presented, and various urban challenges can be addressed holistically.

WeCasablanca underscored the urgency of developing efficient urban solutions in response to pressing challenges such as land scarcity, water stress, energy consumption, and climate change. The company emphasized the importance of integrating technological approaches with human-centric urban planning and management, ensuring a harmonious balance between progress and sustainability.

The 8th edition will delve into a myriad of themes, including e-governance, urban data for smart monitoring, and intelligent citizen management of metropolitan resources. The event will focus not only on the physical development of infrastructure and services but also on enhancing human resilience through innovative technologies, creating a comprehensive approach to urban transformation.

Mohamed Jouahri, General Director of Casablanca Events and Animation, underscored the significance of redefining the concept of "smartness" in the context of smart cities. "This edition offers a unique opportunity to share knowledge, exchange experiences, and co-create innovative solutions for contemporary urban challenges," he said, highlighting the event's collaborative spirit.

Echoing the sentiment, Hassan Radoine, director of the School of Architecture at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and President of the Scientific Committee, emphasized the importance of guiding the phenomenon of metropolization in a resilient and sustainable manner. Radoine stressed the need for continuous monitoring of urban performance to ensure that growth is balanced with environmental impacts, fostering a harmonious coexistence between urban development and ecological preservation.

As the world grapples with the challenges of rapid urbanization, events like Casablanca Smart City serve as catalysts for innovative solutions, fostering collaboration, and driving sustainable urban transformation. With its carefully curated program and commitment to fostering dialogue, the 8th edition promises to be a landmark event, paving the way for smarter, more livable, and resilient cities of the future.
