Cassis calls to open a "New Chapter" in relations with the EU
Bern, October 18, 2025 — Swiss Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis urged on Saturday for a fresh approach to Switzerland’s agreements with the European Union (EU), calling the new package of bilateral accords “vital for the country’s prosperity and sovereignty.”
Addressing delegates of the FDP.The Liberals (PLR) in Bern, Cassis described the initiative as a strategic choice, not a political whim.
“Switzerland lives at the heart of Europe. With our neighbors, we trade, work, and study. The quality of these relationships determines our prosperity, security, and ultimately our quality of life,” Cassis emphasized, noting that over half of Swiss exports go to the EU.
The Federal Councillor reassured that Switzerland remains in control of its own path while stressing that without the planned new steps, the bilateral track could fade in the medium term.
The party meeting in Bern will feature speeches from around 120 delegates over the course of the day.
