Airbus turns toward Saab as European Fighter Jet project faces uncertainty
European aerospace group Airbus is increasingly considering Sweden’s Saab as a potential long-term partner, as uncertainty grows around the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), the flagship Franco-German-Spanish fighter jet programme.
The FCAS project, designed to develop Europe’s next-generation combat aircraft, has faced growing political and industrial tensions between participating countries, raising doubts about its long-term structure and timeline. As a result, Airbus is reportedly exploring alternative partnerships to secure its future role in advanced military aviation.
According to industry sources, Airbus has held exploratory discussions with Saab over the past months, reflecting improving defence cooperation between Germany and Sweden. Saab, known for its Gripen fighter jets, is seen as a strong candidate due to its experience in cost-efficient and flexible combat aircraft development.
While Airbus represents Germany and Spain within the FCAS framework, the breakdown in coordination with France has accelerated discussions about other possible multinational defence projects in Europe. Separate cooperation models involving the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan have also been mentioned as alternatives in broader industry talks.
Saab has stated that any decision regarding future fighter jet collaboration would depend on governments rather than companies alone, while expressing openness to industrial cooperation with multiple partners.
The developments highlight a shifting landscape in European defence strategy, as countries reassess joint military projects in response to geopolitical pressures and rising security demands.
