Advancing Regional Growth: Morocco and Nigeria Collaborate on Strategic Gas Pipeline
Morocco and Nigeria are advancing an ambitious project aimed at unlocking economic potential across Western Africa a monumental gas pipeline stretching over 5,700 kilometers along the coastline.
In a recent meeting in Rabat, Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition, Leila Benali, and her Nigerian counterpart, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, discussed progress on the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline initiative launched in 2016.
The mammoth infrastructure project will channel up to 40 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year from Nigeria through 13 Western African nations before connecting to European markets via Spain. With an estimated capacity of 3 billion cubic feet per day upon completion, it promises to be a true catalyst for regional integration and prosperity.
Both ministers expressed optimism regarding milestones achieved thus far. Ekpo praised Morocco’s drive and leadership in pushing the project forward since its inception during King Mohammed VI’s landmark 2016 visit to Nigeria.
Benali emphasized how joint ventures like the pipeline will build on positive bilateral momentum and deepen cooperation between the two nations. She highlighted thriving partnerships already underway in areas like renewable energy, hydrocarbon development, and fertilizer production.
The Nigeria-Morocco pipeline has been hailed as one of the most strategically vital endeavors ever embarked upon in Africa. Beyond profits, planners hope it will deliver even more valuable returns spurring industrial growth, creating jobs, sharing know-how, and inspiring African nations to work together to fully harness the continent’s immense potential.
