Morocco Secures Key Role in Global Water Scarcity Initiative

Morocco has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to address global water scarcity by securing a position on the steering committee of the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG). This development occurred during the Rome Water Dialogue, a component of the World Food Forum organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The kingdom's election to this prestigious committee underscores its commitment to representing African interests in tackling water scarcity issues that affect agricultural practices worldwide. This recognition comes at a crucial time when many nations, particularly in Africa, are grappling with the challenges posed by water shortages in food production.

Youssef Balla, Morocco's Permanent Representative to UN agencies in Rome, emphasized that this appointment reflects the international community's acknowledgment of King Mohammed VI's vision for effective water resource management and improved food security. In its new role, Morocco is poised to influence strategic initiatives aimed at mitigating the impact of water scarcity on agriculture.

The country plans to leverage its expertise in sustainable water management to foster international collaboration in addressing the global water crisis. As part of its responsibilities, Morocco will oversee the approval of international recommendations and work to mobilize essential political and financial support to meet the objectives of WASAG.

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu commended Morocco's efforts during the High-Level Water Dialogue, highlighting King Mohammed VI's leadership in water management. He noted the Sovereign's significant role in shaping public policies aimed at enhancing the resilience of the national economy in the face of escalating water challenges.

WASAG, established during COP 22 in Marrakech in November 2016, continues to serve as a vital resource for nations struggling with water scarcity issues. The recent adoption of the Rome Declaration by ministers and heads of delegations at the World Food Forum represents a unified commitment among partners to strengthen collaboration and mobilize necessary resources to address the devastating impacts of the water crisis on agriculture.

Morocco's election to the WASAG steering committee not only recognizes the country's efforts in water management but also positions it as a key player in shaping global strategies to combat water scarcity in agriculture. This development holds promise for enhanced international cooperation in addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing food security and sustainable agriculture in the 21st century.
