Adil Benjelloun: A Moroccan leader in global agribusiness

In the realm of international agribusiness, few figures exemplify the blend of cultural heritage and global expertise as effectively as Adil Benjelloun. Currently serving as Vice President of MEFSCO, a strategic partnership between the American agricultural powerhouse Cargill and Saudi Arabia's leading sweetener producer, Arasco, Benjelloun seamlessly integrates two worlds: the rich cultural tapestry of Morocco and the dynamic international perspective shaped by his extensive career.

Early foundations: From Morocco to Montreal

Born into a family from Fez, Benjelloun spent his formative years in Casablanca's vibrant Maarif neighborhood during the 1990s. He describes Casablanca as "a mix of tradition and modernity," providing an enriching backdrop for his upbringing. His academic pursuits were heavily influenced by his maternal grandfather, Abdelaziz Aiouch, one of Morocco’s pioneering mathematicians and a key figure in shaping the country's educational landscape post-independence. "His influence played a major role in my pursuit of knowledge and excellence," Benjelloun reflects.

At the age of 11, Benjelloun's family moved to Montreal, Canada, marking a significant cultural transition. He recalls the challenges of adapting to a new environment, stating, "Imagine trading warm, sunny beaches for cold, snowy winters.” This early experience of cultural diversity fostered resilience and adaptability in him. "Montreal was where I truly discovered the power of embracing diversity and the beauty of cross-cultural connections,” he adds.

Building a global career: From Canada to the Middle East

Benjelloun’s professional journey mirrors his international outlook. He studied Strategic Management and International Business at McGill University and further broadened his perspective at TEC de Monterrey in Mexico. This robust educational background, complemented by a life spent across North America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, equipped him with a global perspective.

His career began in the Canadian public sector in Newfoundland, where he gained insights into governance and regulation. “That experience taught me the importance of understanding policy frameworks and how they impact business operations,” he explains. However, his strong ties to Morocco soon drew him back, leading him to the Tanger Free Zone (TMSA). Here, he contributed to Morocco’s economic development, witnessing firsthand how strategic investment zones can transform regional economies.

Finding a calling in the agro-industrial sector

Benjelloun's next career chapter in the agro-industrial sector revealed his true calling. He joined Döhler, a global leader in natural food ingredients, where he spent nearly eight years developing markets in the Gulf region across various segments, including dairy and confectionery. "We were introducing innovative ingredient solutions to an emerging market, which required a deep understanding of both technical product capabilities and regional consumer preferences," he explains.

Under his guidance, Döhler achieved impressive growth, maintaining a 10% year-on-year increase during his tenure. “This wasn’t just about sales figures—it represented successful market penetration and building lasting relationships with key industry players,” he states. His extensive experience in the Gulf region provided him with essential knowledge of the food ingredients market and the specific challenges of operating in the Middle East.

MEFSCO: Leading a strategic joint venture

Today, as Vice President at MEFSCO, Benjelloun oversees a strategic partnership between Cargill and Arasco, focusing on providing high-quality, sustainable food ingredients across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He describes MEFSCO as "a powerful combination of global expertise and regional knowledge," and emphasizes the importance of developing innovative solutions tailored to clients' evolving needs.

Leading a diverse team, Benjelloun navigates the complexities of a joint venture, balancing different corporate cultures and strategic priorities. "My experience working across diverse cultures has been invaluable in navigating these complexities," he notes.

A global perspective with Moroccan roots

Adil Benjelloun embodies the essence of a modern global executive—internationally experienced yet deeply connected to his cultural roots. His journey from the streets of Casablanca to leadership roles in multinational corporations illustrates the power of embracing diversity while preserving a strong sense of identity. At MEFSCO, he continues to drive innovation and growth in the agro-industrial sector, serving as a role model for future global leaders.

"Whether I stay in Dubai, return to Morocco, or work elsewhere,” Benjelloun concludes, “my ambition remains the same—to make a meaningful impact on the world while staying true to the values that shaped me."
