Successful Cocaine Seizure at Moroccan Border Crossing Disrupts Major Drug Trafficking Attempt
Moroccan authorities achieved a significant victory in the global fight against drug smuggling with a recent large-scale cocaine bust at the El Guergarat border crossing near Dakhla. Acting on intelligence, security forces intercepted over 362 kilograms of cocaine, valued at millions of dollars, cleverly concealed inside a cargo truck arriving from Sub-Saharan Africa.
The well-coordinated operation unfolded on Monday afternoon at a crucial border post situated along major drug trafficking routes. Customs officers and police diligently searched an internationally registered truck entering Morocco. Hidden within intricately designed compartments integrated into the cabin and bodywork, officers discovered 16 bundles containing a substantial quantity of illegal white powder.
The two Moroccan men operating the drug-laden truck, a 40-year-old driver and his 41-year-old assistant, were swiftly apprehended. This major seizure aligns with the ongoing implementation of a comprehensive action plan targeting synthetic drug trafficking throughout the country.
Leveraging a long-term national anti-crime strategy, Moroccan police have enhanced border security and fostered collaboration with Customs officers to strengthen intelligence efforts. This strategic approach has enabled authorities to systematically dismantle major smuggling operations, intercepting over 81 tons of hashish and nearly 2 tons of cocaine annually.
Monday's unprecedented cocaine capture underscores an intensified crackdown on international drug syndicates attempting to transport substantial shipments through Moroccan transit points. Law enforcement is actively working to unravel connections between local collaborators and overseas masterminds, aiming to completely dismantle trafficking networks. The audacious smugglers failed to navigate the heightened security measures, and now face severe charges for jeopardizing Moroccan society.
