The Emirate of Sharjah, the third-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following Abu Dhabi and Dubai, has resolutely decided to prohibit New Year's fireworks celebrations.

In a noteworthy announcement conveyed through an Instagram post by the Sharjah Police, the emirate expressed its unwavering commitment to "demonstrate genuine solidarity and extend humanitarian cooperation to our brethren in the Gaza Strip."

The statement emphasized the importance of collective efforts from both institutions and individuals, accompanied by a warning of legal repercussions for those who dare to breach this directive. It highlighted the deeply ingrained culture and ideology of humanitarian solidarity that the Emirate of Sharjah adheres to.

While other emirates in the UAE continue to promote public celebrations and fireworks, this ban appears to be exclusive to Sharjah. This significant gesture comes at a time when the political dynamics of the region have experienced notable shifts, particularly with the UAE setting a precedent by establishing diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020.

The prohibition of New Year's Eve fireworks in Sharjah occurs against the grim backdrop of the ongoing genocidal campaign by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) in Gaza. The health ministry in Gaza has reported an alarming toll, with an estimated 21,000 people killed and 54,918 others wounded as a result of IOF ground and air strikes.

The devastating consequences of Israel's brutal campaign in Gaza are painfully evident through the forced displacement of nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million inhabitants, many of whom have been compelled to flee their homes multiple times.

Sharjah's decision to forgo the traditional symbol of celebration, the fireworks, assumes a deeper significance that transcends mere festivity. By taking this unique approach to New Year's Eve, the local authorities are unequivocally expressing Sharjah's unwavering commitment to humanitarian values and its firm stance on global issues.

Meanwhile, as Sharjah makes this distinctive move regarding New Year's Eve celebrations, the broader UAE continues to navigate its evolving diplomatic landscape.
