On Sunday, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) revealed plans for an expanded Club World Cup tournament set to make its debut in June 2025. Notably, powerhouses such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Real Madrid have already secured spots in this highly anticipated competition.
Scheduled to unfold in the United States from June 15th to July 13th, 2025, just one year ahead of the jointly hosted FIFA World Cup in North America, this global spectacle will feature 32 clubs initially divided into eight groups. Subsequent knockout rounds will commence with the round of 16.
Representatives from each of FIFA's six regional confederations will partake in the event. CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia), and Concacaf (North America) will each field four teams. UEFA (Europe) secures an impressive 12 slots, Conmebol (South America) claims six, and OFC (Oceania) contributes one.
For UEFA, the four slots awarded are reserved for the winners of the 2021 Champions League (Chelsea), 2022 (Real Madrid), 2023 (Manchester City), and 2024. An additional eight teams, including PSG, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Porto, and Benfica, have earned qualification based on UEFA rankings.
Expressing enthusiasm for the news, a source close to PSG stated in an interview with AFP, "This is absolutely fantastic news with PSG already ensured a place in the biggest and most prestigious global club tournament." Furthermore, the source emphasized that PSG is guaranteed "substantial new revenue" from their participation.
The tournament pledges to showcase elite competition between continental champions and top domestic league clubs worldwide. Given PSG's consistent dominance in France's Ligue 1, they stand well-positioned as serious contenders on the global stage when the new event kicks off in two years.
