ABHOER: Dam Reservoirs Report 215 Million Cubic Meters, Sparking Concerns over Water Management
In a recent report, the Agence du Bassin Hydraulique de l'Oum Er Rbia (ABHOER) revealed that the reservoirs of its major dams currently hold a total of 215 million cubic meters of water, representing only 4.4% of their total capacity. This figure is significantly lower than the numbers recorded during the same period last year, which stood at 414 million cubic meters, reflecting a more substantial 8.4% fill rate. The reservoir levels of Bin El Ouidane, Ahmed El Hansali, Hassan 1er, and Moulay Youssef dams all exhibit varying degrees of decline, each falling short of their previous year's counterparts.
As water scarcity continues to be a growing concern, ABHOER is actively pursuing ambitious plans to address the issue. Among the upcoming endeavors are the construction of two large-scale dams in the Beni Mellal Khénifra region. Additionally, the agency aims to implement the construction of numerous small-scale dams across 61 sites as part of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation for the period 2020-2027.
Given the current situation, the prudent management of water resources remains of utmost importance. With reservoir levels at such critical lows, it is crucial to take proactive measures to ensure the sustainability and availability of water for various purposes, including domestic consumption and agricultural needs. ABHOER's efforts to expand water storage capacity through the construction of new dams signify a step in the right direction, but continued vigilance and efficient resource allocation are essential in tackling the challenges posed by water scarcity.
