Morocco Receives Praise from African Union for Strengthening Election Observer Capabilities
In a recent review of the 2023 polls and discussions about the prospects for 2024, the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC) has applauded Morocco for its unwavering commitment to enhancing the skills of African electoral observers. The PSC recognizes the critical role of such initiatives in fostering free and fair elections across the continent.
During the meeting, the PSC expressed satisfaction with Morocco's substantial contributions to programs aimed at bolstering the capacities of electoral observers. In an official statement, the PSC declared, "The AU commends the Kingdom of Morocco for facilitating programs to strengthen the capacities of African electoral observers and calls for the continuation of this programmatic support to the AU Commission."
The council went further to urge member states to intensify their efforts in enhancing the institutional capabilities of national election bodies and judiciaries. This recommendation emphasizes the necessity of allocating adequate resources to ensure the independence and professionalism of these crucial entities.
Highlighting the importance of timely support to member states, the PSC underscored the need for enhanced collaboration with domestic observer groups. This collaboration aims to enable more effective monitoring in accordance with international, continental, regional, and national standards.
Morocco's facilitation of observer training programs received praise from the PSC for its positive impact on improving electoral processes in Africa. The acknowledgment emphasizes the significance of such initiatives in promoting transparency and fairness in the ballot box.
As the PSC encourages other member states to follow Morocco's example, its call for timely and adequate support to election bodies aligns with the broader goal of upholding democratic principles and internationally-aligned electoral processes. The African Union looks forward to a continued partnership with Morocco in strengthening the skills of electoral observers and ensuring the integrity of elections throughout the continent.
