Morocco's Healthcare Crisis Intensifies as Nurses Launch 'Final Offensive
Morocco's healthcare sector is teetering on the brink as the country's nurses union prepares for a series of escalating protests known as the "Last Offensive." The Independent Union of Moroccan Nurses and Health Technicians is pushing for significant pay increases for dedicated nurses, whose salaries have remained stagnant for over 16 years.
Growing increasingly frustrated after years of inaction, the union is poised to initiate a series of disruptive demonstrations later this month, including sit-ins, nationwide strikes, and a march towards the Ministry of Health. Despite a preliminary agreement between the government and healthcare unions, nurses remain dissatisfied, dismissing the proposed increases of just 800-600MAD as "disastrous."
Adding to the pressure, unrest is spreading to the country's medical students. Upset by cuts to their education program without proper support, students across Morocco boycotted final exams in mass protests last month. With over 90% in favor, they are demanding that quality not be compromised for the sake of duration.
As negotiations inch toward the January deadline, the nurses union warns that this final push may be the last resort to secure the improvements they rightfully deserve. With an annual loss of 600 doctors to emigration and working conditions in dire need of renewal, addressing Morocco's healthcare crisis has become an increasingly urgent matter.
