Former Canadian Envoy Awarded Morocco’s Highest Honor
His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco bestowed the nation’s highest honor, the Grand Cordon of the Alaouite Order, upon former Canadian Ambassador Nell Stewart for her commendable efforts in strengthening bilateral relations. The decoration ceremony, held in Ottawa, was attended by prominent Canadian officials and Moroccan ambassador Souriya Otmani, who presented the royal medal.
The Grand Cordon, established during the colonial period, is awarded to outstanding civilians and military officers. As noted by Otmani, this distinction acknowledges Stewart’s exceptional work in fostering closer ties between the two countries across all areas of cooperation. She emphasized that the medal symbolizes the profound friendship between Morocco and Canada, underscoring their commitment to an exemplary, mutually beneficial partnership.
In her remarks, a grateful Stewart expressed her deep honor at receiving the royal distinction directly from HM King Mohammed VI. Fondly reminiscing about her time representing Canada in the “magnificent country” of Morocco with its rich culture and emerging economy, Stewart expressed confidence that the robust ties between Canada and Morocco will continue to flourish for the well-being of both nations.
The ceremony highlighted the 62 years of amicable bilateral relations between the two countries. Although Stewart has concluded her posting in Rabat, this royal medal serves as a testament to Morocco’s appreciation for her efforts in strengthening the bonds between the two nations and peoples.
