In a meeting held on Thursday in Rabat between Morocco's Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, and UN Special Representative for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, Morocco reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting UN initiatives dedicated to resolving Libya's longstanding political impasse.

During a joint press briefing, Minister Bourita underscored Morocco's dedication to endorsing the UN-led process in Libya, aligning with the "enlightened leadership" of King Mohammed VI. He emphasized that King Mohammed VI's directives distinctly articulate Morocco's backing for all endeavors of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative, aimed at guiding Libya out of the institutional crisis it has faced for years.

Minister Bourita commended Mr. Bathily's "relevant efforts" to date and reiterated Morocco's willingness to support the UN envoy's ongoing pursuit of a "reasoned approach founded on trust." This approach aims to empower Libya's factions to overcome internal divides.

Highlighting Mr. Bathily's credibility among Libyan groups, Minister Bourita endorsed his strategy of constructive listening and consensus-building as the optimal pathway for overcoming the political impasse and facilitating delayed presidential and parliamentary polls.

In the Minister's perspective, elections stand out as the "most appropriate solution" to end institutional paralysis and usher in a new era of stability, legitimacy, and post-conflict renewal, centered on meeting the needs of the Libyan people.

Minister Bourita argued that the legal frameworks for elections are now in place, thanks to previous reconciliation meetings held in Morocco. However, he acknowledged that further compromises are necessary to enrich the existing legislative basis.

Concluding his statement, Minister Bourita expressed Morocco's readiness to support Mr. Bathily's momentum in achieving the crucial institutional compromises needed for elections to finally take place. The nation remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering stability and progress in Libya, aligned with the broader objectives of the UN-led initiatives.
