In a recent announcement, President-elect Donald Trump named tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and conservative advocate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new government body, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This agency, inspired by Trump's campaign promise to curb federal spending, is set to tackle extensive government reform and reduction of regulatory red tape.

Trump described DOGE as instrumental in "dismantling Government Bureaucracy" to streamline and reduce federal expenses. The department’s acronym, DOGE, is a nod to a popular internet meme and cryptocurrency, reflecting Musk's background in tech innovation and online culture. In the statement, Musk highlighted the plan’s disruptive potential, calling it a shake-up for those benefiting from government inefficiencies. He later emphasized on social media that this was not a threat to democracy but a “threat to BUREAUCRACY.”

Musk has expressed ambitious goals to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget, exceeding the current $1.7 trillion discretionary budget, though he has yet to provide specific details on targeted reductions. His comments have often singled out smaller budget beneficiaries, such as the Department of Education, which Trump had previously pledged to eliminate during his campaign.

Ramaswamy, a former presidential primary candidate known for advocating federal agency cuts, has suggested that simply imposing standard work hours could reduce the workforce by 25%. In past statements, he called for the elimination of agencies such as the FBI, the Department of Education, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, among others.

The DOGE team is intended to operate independently, providing strategic counsel to the White House on federal restructuring. This arrangement could allow Musk and Ramaswamy to retain their private sector roles without requiring Senate confirmation. Trump has compared this initiative to the scope of the Manhattan Project, setting a target completion date of July 4, 2026, for the department’s mandate.

Trump may also seek presidential reorganization authority from Congress, a rare legislative power that enables executive branch restructuring and consolidation, last granted during the Reagan era. This move could further his broader vision of revamping the federal government, bringing sweeping changes to the executive branch.
