The US Postal Service has halted the reception of parcels from China and Hong Kong indefinitely, a move that has sparked accusations of "unreasonable suppression" from Beijing, escalating the ongoing trade conflict between the two nations.

This suspension coincides with President Donald Trump’s stance on delaying talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite expectations for discussions after the imposition of reciprocal tariffs.

The US Postal Service did not provide specific reasons for the suspension, though it is likely tied to recent tariff measures targeting Chinese imports, including the removal of exemptions for low-value packages. This halt is expected to impact consumer orders in the US, particularly from retailers like Amazon, as Chinese e-commerce giants such as Shein and Temu accounted for a significant portion of small package imports.

In response, China’s foreign ministry expressed strong opposition, urging the US to cease politicizing trade and economic issues, and to stop its unreasonable treatment of Chinese companies. Beijing also defended its retaliatory tariffs as a means of protecting its legitimate interests.

Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods were immediately followed by China's announcement of retaliatory measures, including new levies on US energy, vehicles, and equipment. On top of these actions, the US Department of Homeland Security extended the tariffs to include products from Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Trump temporarily suspended duties on goods from Mexico and Canada, after both countries pledged to increase efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration. While talks with Xi Jinping were expected to take place soon, Trump stated he was not in a rush to engage.

Stock markets showed signs of volatility, with investors anticipating more market fluctuations due to the escalating trade war. Trump’s administration had already imposed 10% tariffs on Chinese goods, adding to the existing tariffs on imports from Washington’s main economic competitor.

China, in retaliation, introduced new tariffs on US energy exports and a range of other goods, such as agricultural machinery and vehicles, while investigating several US companies, including a major fashion group.

Despite the trade tensions, China has diversified its imports, reducing its reliance on the US, while continuing to maintain strong trade relationships with other nations, such as Russia.
