Morocco's handicraft sector generates $14 billion in annual revenue, showcases export growth

Morocco's traditional handicraft industry has emerged as a significant economic powerhouse, generating annual revenues of MAD 140 billion ($14 billion) and contributing 7% to the national Gross Domestic Product.

Secretary of State for Handicrafts Lahcen Saadi presented detailed data during a meeting in Fez, revealing that production-based handicrafts account for MAD 96.3 billion ($9.6 billion), while service-related handicrafts contribute MAD 43.7 billion ($4.3 billion).

The sector encompasses 275,000 craft units and 2,063 businesses, according to Abderrahim Belkhayat, regional director of handicrafts in Fez. Handicraft exports reached MAD 1.11 billion ($111 million) in 2024, marking a 3% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 251 artisans received national quality labels.

The Fez-Meknes region stands out as a crucial hub for the industry, with over 144,000 craftsmen working in artistic and production-related crafts. The region houses 44,000 artisanal units, representing 16% of the national total, and generates nearly MAD 10.6 billion ($1.06 billion), or 11% of Morocco's total handicraft revenue from production and services.

Handicraft exports from Fez-Meknes amounted to MAD 143 million ($14.3 million) in 2024. The region boasts 641 craftsmen with national quality labels, accounting for 25% of the country's total, and hosts 525 firms, representing 23% of Moroccan handicraft enterprises.

The handicraft industry plays a vital role in preserving Morocco's cultural heritage while driving economic growth. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, these crafts serve as a testament to the country's history and creative spirit. Beyond its cultural significance, the sector provides employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of artists and small enterprises, while boosting GDP, income, and exports.

As both domestic and international demand for Moroccan handicrafts continues to grow, the industry maintains its position as a cornerstone in preserving tradition while creating economic opportunities.
