Omar Hilale elected president of UN South-South Cooperation Committee

Omar Hilale, Morocco's permanent representative to the United Nations, was unanimously elected as president of the 22nd session of the UN General Assembly High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation for a two-year term.

In his statement, Hilale highlighted that this election reaffirms Morocco’s leadership role in South-South cooperation, a key pillar of the country’s foreign policy, championed by King Mohammed VI.

He emphasized that under the King’s visionary leadership, Morocco’s approach to South-South cooperation is grounded in solidarity, shared responsibility, sustainable human development, and joint investments in crucial sectors such as education, health, agriculture, vocational training, food security, and climate change mitigation.

The High-Level Committee is the only platform within the UN system tasked with reviewing and evaluating the progress of South-South and triangular cooperation. Its mission is to support the efforts of Southern countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda through inclusive and solidarity-based development projects.

Morocco's presidency of this Committee reinforces the country's status as a success model in the Global South, showcasing the capacity of Southern nations to provide concrete, innovative, and tailored solutions to current global challenges.

This election comes at a time when multilateralism is under scrutiny, development financing faces a crisis, and there is an urgent need to reinvent international cooperation mechanisms. In this evolving context, South-South cooperation stands as a crucial strategic lever to achieve sustainable development goals.

Hilale concluded by stating that his presidency would be guided by the royal vision, placing solidarity, mutual respect, and co-development between Southern countries at the heart of his mandate.
