Iran Grants Temporary Medical Leave to Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi Amid Ongoing Imprisonment

Iran has granted temporary medical leave to Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since November 2021. According to her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, Mohammadi’s release comes after a recommendation from the examining doctor, and the public prosecutor suspended her sentence for a period of three weeks on medical grounds. The announcement was made by Nili on the social media platform X.

Despite the temporary reprieve, Mohammadi’s family and supporters have expressed dissatisfaction, calling for her immediate and unconditional release. They argued that a 21-day suspension of her sentence is insufficient, urging for her release to be extended for a longer period, ideally up to three months. The supporters described the action as "too little, too late," emphasizing that more must be done to ensure Mohammadi’s safety and freedom.

Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, has been a prominent advocate for human rights in Iran, particularly focusing on the abolition of capital punishment and the end of the compulsory hijab law. Her activism has made her a target of the Iranian regime, leading to her imprisonment on charges linked to her peaceful protests.

Her release on medical grounds comes amid a complex and ongoing struggle. In the months following her Nobel award, a revolutionary court in Iran sentenced Mohammadi to an additional 15-month term for allegedly spreading anti-state propaganda while incarcerated. This development highlights the regime’s continued crackdown on dissent, even against individuals who have gained international recognition for their efforts.

In a poignant moment earlier this year, when Mohammadi’s father passed away, she was denied permission to attend his funeral or offer her condolences to her family in Iran, further underscoring the harsh restrictions placed on her during her imprisonment.

Mohammadi's case reflects the broader repression of activists in Iran, especially women who challenge the country’s authoritarian policies. Despite the obstacles she faces, Mohammadi remains a key figure in the Woman Life Freedom movement, continuing to inspire global calls for justice and change.

Her temporary release, while seen as a small step forward, serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights and political freedom in Iran, as well as the resilience of those who dare to speak out.
