Morocco's OCP Group has recently finalized three loan agreements totaling $188 million with the African Development Bank and the Clean Technology Fund, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to advancing sustainability through green projects.

These loans are earmarked to bolster OCP's progressive agenda of transitioning its mining and industrial operations toward renewable energy sources and desalinated seawater. Key among these initiatives is the establishment of three modular desalination plants boasting a combined capacity of 110 million cubic meters annually.

Karim Lotfi Senhadji, OCP's CFO, views this financing as a substantial catalyst for the company's $13 billion green investment program. The overarching objective is clear: to achieve complete reliance on non-conventional water sources by 2024, shift entirely to renewable energy by 2027, and produce green ammonia without carbon emissions by 2032, positioning OCP firmly on the path to full carbon neutrality by 2040.

The primary loan of $150 million from the African Development Bank, supplemented by an additional $18 million from the Canada-Africa Development Bank Climate Fund, will be directed toward funding the desalination projects. These initiatives are anticipated to supply over 75 million cubic meters of potable water annually to coastal cities, benefiting upwards of 1.5 million residents.

Furthermore, a $20 million injection from the Clean Technology Fund will be allocated to the development of utility-scale energy storage solutions powered by solar and wind energy, effectively eradicating the use of fossil fuels in OCP's plants. Both endeavors are poised to significantly enhance local water security while concurrently mitigating emissions from industrial operations.

Achraf Tarsim, head of the AfDB's Morocco office, commended the potential for innovative approaches to mitigate water stress challenges within the country. Jean Touchette of the Canadian Embassy echoed this sentiment, highlighting the Climate Fund's pivotal role in supporting sustainable solutions to combat the impacts of climate change.

With the substantial backing of major financial institutions, OCP is strategically positioned to lead the charge in green mining across the continent, while simultaneously actualizing its ambitious carbon reduction targets. These climate-smart projects hold the promise of yielding broad-ranging social and environmental benefits that are poised to significantly contribute to Morocco's developmental trajectory.
