Moroccan Regions Brace for Impending Dust Storms and High Winds
The Moroccan weather service has issued an orange alert for impending dust storms and powerful winds expected to sweep across numerous parts of the country this weekend.
According to the General Directorate of Meteorology's weather bulletin, 11 Moroccan regions are on alert for wind gusts ranging from 70-90 km/h from Friday morning through Saturday evening. These regions include Fkih Ben Salah, Jerada, Nador, Al Hoceima, Driouch, Ksar El Kebir, Taourirt, Taza, Boulemane, Midelt, and Guelmim.
Additionally, strong winds of 70-85 km/h are forecast from Friday noon until midnight in Asa-Zag, Sidi Ifni, as well as coastal zones of Chichaoua, Agadir-Ida-Ou Tanane, Tiznit, and Inezgane-Ait Melloul.
Residents in these areas are urged to secure any loose objects, avoid outdoor activities, and stay up-to-date with weather advisories during this period. The alert level has been set at orange, indicating a high degree of caution.
This warning follows a previous alert issued earlier this month for regions including the northern city of Tangier, where powerful gusts caused significant property damage. Tragically, the strong winds also resulted in a fatality - a 29-year-old woman lost her life after part of a building facade collapsed on her due to the conditions.
With forecasts of fierce winds and air thick with dust expected across several parts of Morocco once more this weekend, officials are urging the public to take all necessary precautions in the face of potentially hazardous weather.
