Enhancing Casablanca's Public Transit: Integrating Networks and Updating Fares
Casablanca has taken a decisive step towards refining its public transportation infrastructure by embracing a comprehensive fare restructuring plan. This move comes in anticipation of integrating its bus rapid transit (BRT) and tram lines, marking a pivotal moment in the city's quest to improve mobility and accessibility for its residents.
The new fare structure, ratified during the city council's ordinary session on Wednesday, May 15th, stems from a proposal put forth by Casa Transports, the entity tasked with managing Casablanca's public transportation system. Nabila Rmili, Casablanca's mayor, underscored the necessity of these fare adjustments to accommodate the expansion of the network, which is set to double from 49 kilometers to 100 kilometers with the impending launch of the T3 and T4 tram lines in June.
Additionally, as the city gears up to integrate its bus network into the interoperable system, Rmili emphasized the ongoing efforts to adapt bus routes, ensuring comprehensive coverage of areas that are presently underserved or not served at all.
The newly established fares are as follows:
- Single trip: 9 dirhams
- Two trips: 16 dirhams
- Rechargeable card: 7 dirhams per trip, with a maximum recharge of 700 dirhams, plus 30 dirhams for the card
- Student card: 170 dirhams per month, plus 30 dirhams for the card
- Subscription card: 70 dirhams per week, 250 dirhams per month, plus 30 dirhams for the card
Furthermore, Casa Transports has introduced four new tram-BRT offers, including an annual subscription for 2,750 dirhams (with one free month), a quarterly subscription for 750 dirhams, an unlimited 24-hour pass for 50 dirhams valid across the entire network, and a three-day pass for 120 dirhams.
As the interoperability extends to encompass the bus network, a new management framework is under consideration by the Local Development Company (SDL) in collaboration with pertinent stakeholders, including the Intercommunal Cooperation Establishment (ECI) Al Baida and Alsa.
A proposed transfer fare between buses and dedicated public transit lines (trams and BRT) has been set at 8 dirhams, with the potential for variation between 8, 9, and 10 dirhams based on the length of the bus journey.
Moreover, the council has endorsed an increase in fines for offenses such as spitting or placing feet on seats within the vehicles. Certain infractions will now incur a penalty of 300 dirhams if paid immediately, up from the previous 50 dirhams.
As Casablanca continues to progress and expand, this comprehensive overhaul of its public transportation system signifies a significant leap towards improved connectivity, accessibility, and a more seamless mobility experience for both its residents and visitors.
