US Approves $740 Million Missile Sale to Egypt

The United States has taken a significant step by approving the sale of 720 Stinger missiles to Egypt, a key partner in the region, particularly in mediating the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This move, valued at $740 million, underscores the evolving dynamics of US foreign policy and its commitment to maintaining stability in the Middle East.

The Pentagon's announcement, made on Tuesday, highlighted Egypt's role as a "friend and important force for political stability and economic growth" in the region. While the US Congress has the power to block such arms deals, it is an uncommon occurrence, and this sale is expected to proceed smoothly.

This transaction adds to a growing military order book for the US, which has recently approved arms sales to Taiwan and its NATO allies. The country also continues to support Ukraine and Israel with military aid.

President Joe Biden, upon assuming office in 2021, pledged to take a tougher stance on Egypt's human rights record under President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi. However, his administration has authorized several arms sales to Egypt, highlighting the complexities of US foreign policy. Egypt, a signatory to the 1979 peace treaty with Israel, remains one of the primary recipients of US security aid.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent visit to Cairo further emphasized the strong partnership between the two nations. Egypt, along with Qatar, is actively engaged in mediating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

This arms deal is a strategic move by the US, balancing its commitment to regional stability and its support for key allies. It reflects the delicate dance of diplomacy and the evolving nature of international relations. As the situation in Gaza remains tense, the US's decision to bolster Egypt's military capabilities sends a clear message of support and cooperation.
