Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. This appeal was made during a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot in Beirut, where Mikati emphasized that ending Israeli aggression against Lebanon is crucial for restoring peace. He reiterated the need to revive a previous appeal from the United States and France advocating for a ceasefire.

As tensions rise, Israel has mobilized troops in anticipation of a potential ground invasion of Lebanon, prompting discussions among Lebanese officials, politicians, religious leaders, and military representatives. Barrot, representing France, expressed solidarity with Lebanon, underscoring his country’s commitment to civilian protection and support for the Lebanese army during these tumultuous times. His visit included the delivery of 12 tonnes of medical supplies aimed at addressing urgent humanitarian needs.

The French official also met with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi to discuss the critical need for electing a president in Lebanon as a foundational step towards stability. Mikati stressed that halting Israeli aggression and implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 should be prioritized to pave the way for peace.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, Barrot announced €10 million in emergency humanitarian aid to support organizations like the Lebanese Red Cross. This assistance comes as the UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan ordered $100 million in urgent relief for the Lebanese people.

In a significant development, Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general Sheikh Naim Qassem addressed the public following the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah. He affirmed Hezbollah's commitment to its objectives and readiness for ground engagement against Israeli forces, vowing to continue their struggle in support of Gaza and Palestine.

The situation remains dire as Israeli airstrikes have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including recent attacks that killed key Palestinian leaders and members of Hezbollah. The death toll from these airstrikes continues to rise, with reports indicating over 45 casualties from a single strike on a residential building.

As the conflict escalates, both sides are preparing for further confrontations, with Hezbollah responding to Israeli attacks by targeting military bases. The international community watches closely as diplomatic talks unfold amidst fears of an all-out war in the region.
