In a harrowing incident that disrupted the city of Oran, Algeria, a soldier suffering from a severe psychological crisis unleashed a torrent of gunfire on Thursday afternoon, resulting in at least one fatality.

The alarming event began around noon when the soldier, armed and clearly distressed, escaped from his barracks. He then initiated a chaotic spree of random shootings in the vicinity of the Cherfaoui roundabout, near the bustling Othmania Park, creating an atmosphere of pandemonium among residents and passersby.

Oualid Kebir, a respected Algerian journalist and analyst, broke the news on his X account, stating, "There was an exchange of gunfire on National Liberation Army Street near Othmania Park in Oran a short while ago." Kebir elaborated, “According to information from the scene, a soldier opened fire on his colleagues before going out into the street and continuing to shoot.”

Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of utter confusion and terror as they sought refuge from the unexpected violence. The situation prompted an immediate and robust security response, with units from the BRI, Gendarmerie, and Algerian Army swiftly deployed to contain the threat.

Law enforcement officials were able to apprehend the soldier after a tense intervention, bringing an end to the immediate danger. Reports from the scene suggest multiple injuries, and while the official death toll remains unconfirmed, some sources indicate that as many as three individuals may have perished in the incident.

Local authorities have launched a thorough investigation to uncover the precise circumstances surrounding this tragic event and to provide much-needed answers to the grieving families.

As Oran grapples with the aftermath, the incident underscores the urgent need for addressing mental health crises within military ranks to prevent such devastating occurrences in the future.
