Gaza City, Gaza Strip - The death toll among Palestinian journalists has reached a staggering 165 since October 7, as confirmed by the Gaza government media office. This grim milestone follows the recent deaths of Al Jazeera journalist Ismail al-Ghoul and cameraman Rami al-Refee, who were killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

In a solemn statement, the media office condemned the attack, labeling it a “heinous crime” and holding Israel responsible. They urged the international community and media organizations to apply pressure on Israel to halt these ongoing violations.

The two journalists, associated with Al Jazeera Arabic, lost their lives in al-Shati camp in Northern Gaza. Their car, clearly marked as a press vehicle, was struck shortly after they had completed their reporting near the house of Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh, who had been targeted in an earlier Israeli operation in Tehran. Despite wearing press vests, al-Ghoul and al-Refee were attacked as they were en route to the Baptist Hospital following orders from Israeli forces to leave the area.

This incident underscores the perilous environment for journalists in Gaza, already deemed the deadliest conflict zone for media workers worldwide. The Committee to Protect Journalists, based in New York, reported that 111 media workers have been killed since the conflict began, marking an unprecedented period of danger since the organization started tracking such data in 1992.

Anas al-Sharif, a journalist reporting from Gaza, was present at the hospital where the bodies of al-Ghoul and al-Refee were taken. He spoke to the profound commitment of Ismail al-Ghoul in documenting the plight of displaced Palestinians and the injured in Gaza.

“Ismail was dedicated to conveying the suffering of the displaced Palestinians and the wounded, highlighting the massacres committed by the [Israeli] occupation against the innocent people in Gaza,” al-Sharif stated.

He suggested that Israel might be attempting to suppress the dissemination of these images and reports, either by directly targeting journalists or their families and coverage locations.

Al Jazeera’s managing editor, Mohamed Moawad, paid tribute to Ismail al-Ghoul on social media platform X, acknowledging his unwavering dedication to his people and homeland despite the formidable challenges.

“Ismail was renowned for his professionalism and dedication, bringing the world’s attention to the suffering and atrocities committed in Gaza, especially in Al-Shifa Hospital and the northern neighborhoods. Without Ismail, the world would not have seen the devastating images of these massacres,” Moawad wrote.

As the conflict continues, the dangers faced by journalists in Gaza remain a stark reminder of the high cost of bringing the truth to light in times of war.
