Morocco Secures $1 Billion Spy Satellite Deal with Israel Aerospace Industries
In a significant development in the strategic partnership between Morocco and Israel, Morocco has secured a $1 billion deal with the state-owned Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) to acquire a cutting-edge spy satellite. This landmark agreement, which was kept under wraps until recent reports surfaced, highlights the growing defense cooperation between the two countries.
According to the details revealed, the contract will see IAI supplying Morocco with the Ofek 13 spy satellite, which will replace the country's existing Airbus and Thales satellites. The satellite is expected to be delivered within the next five years, bolstering Morocco's military surveillance and intelligence capabilities.
The deal was reportedly finalized last year as part of Morocco's efforts to enhance its defense infrastructure. IAI Chairman Amir Peretz is said to have played a crucial role in securing the agreement, leveraging his connections with senior officials in the Moroccan government.
"This is a significant deal that strengthens the security partnership between Israel and Morocco," said a defense analyst familiar with the matter. "The acquisition of the Ofek 13 satellite will provide Morocco with a powerful tool for monitoring its strategic interests in the region."
The agreement comes on the heels of another major defense deal between the two countries. In 2021, Morocco purchased the Barak 8 advanced air defense system from IAI for a reported $500 million, further solidifying the burgeoning military cooperation.
The Ofek 13 satellite, which is part of Israel's homegrown Ofek series of intelligence satellites, is known for its advanced capabilities in high-resolution imaging and real-time data transmission. Its addition to Morocco's arsenal will undoubtedly enhance the country's ability to gather critical intelligence and bolster its overall defense posture.
The $1 billion contract is a testament to the deepening ties between Israel and Morocco, which normalized their diplomatic relations in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords. The agreement also highlights the growing significance of the defense industry in the broader context of regional geopolitics and security dynamics.
As the world continues to grapple with evolving security challenges, the Morocco-Israel partnership in the realm of defense technology and intelligence-gathering is poised to play an increasingly pivotal role in the years to come.
